Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
If you’ve got too many pre-conceptions of just how a Sherlock Holmes movie should pan out, then it’s probably best that you check them in before popping this latest version in your player. Starring Robert Downey Jr. in the title role and accompanied by Jude Law as Watson, this film dispenses with some of the conventions of Holmes, and instead starts turning him into something of a period action hero.

Downey Jr. is more than up to the challenge too. Early scenes in Sherlock Holmes are more Fight Club than sleuth-influenced, with the hand of director Guy Ritchie behind the camera being very clear. But the film soon settles down and starts to have some fun, with the able assistance of Mark Strong and Rachel McAdams, among the supporting cast.

Yet this is Downey Jr.’s show, and he doesn’t waste the opportunity. He’s an engaging leading man at the worst of times, and he’s clearly having a ball here. What’s more, it’s immensely satisfying when his Sherlock Holmes gets down to the business of solving crimes, even though there are some really quite impressive action sequences to work through first.

There are problems, of course. There’s not enough flesh on the bones of some of the characters, and the early part of the film feels very different from the latter stages. But there’s solid groundwork here for the inevitable franchise, and watching Downey Jr. reprise the role of Sherlock Holmes over the next few years should be really quite good fun too. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars Elementary my dear watson   July 26, 2010

Super film, both main stars steal the show, especially R D Jr..... very very good

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but not really Holmes in its true form!   July 25, 2010
Random
This film is relatively good fun, as long as you view it simply as a stand alone action film set in Victorian London. Apart from the characters' names, there is very little that is faithful to the original books.

The relationship between Holmes and Watson is fundamentally different and both are now hard as nails street fighters. Despite having a severe limp and walking with a limp, Watson has the strength of 10 men and is able to hold his own against numerous complex and capable enemies. He is also seems to be immune to damage from explosions.

Holmes is now interested in the pursuit of the female form and views them in an entirely modern fashion. Women in the film are now liberated and strong feminists, rather than shrinking violets.

The film is less a detective mystery, more a Victorian action thriller with constant fight scenes and chases through well designed sets, with plenty of CGI.

Approach this with an open mind, well prepared for it to be nothing like the original books.

Please also be aware that Robert Downey Jr. speaks in very quickly and quietly in almost husky tones. This makes it difficult to understand what he is saying, regardless of how high you turn up the volume.

3 out of 5 stars Sherlock Holmes DVD   July 24, 2010
Paul (Nr. Hitchin, Herts United Kingdom)
It's very different to what one might imagine, and is in contrast with the more TRADITIONAL Sherlock Holmes.

just such a brilliant film -- one of the best around, holmes reminds me of a bit like captain sparrow (depp)in pirates of the carribean -- great stuff !!
i think most people will enjoy this tongue in cheek film.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent   July 17, 2010
Amber (Kent, England)
I am a big fan of all things murderous and was afraid to watch this being a Basil Rathbone girl but it is excellent. I have given it four stars rather than four out of loyalty to BR, bought this as a birthday present for a friend who loved it.
