5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Film   July 26, 2010
Mrs. T. Smith (London, UK)
This film is well worth purchasing if you like costume dramas. Based on the early reign of Queen Victoria - it can be watched many times without getting bored. It is a heart warming story with a happy ending.

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Piece of Cinema   July 22, 2010

'The Young Victoria' is a beautiful film for many reasons.

First of all, it is wonderfully acted. The actors who have been selected for each role do a very good job indeed. Emily Blunt is marvellously well cast. She is beautiful, very intriguing, well-spoken and she seems to say each of her lines with great thought behind each word. Her co-star, Rupert Friend, is also excellent. Together, they are perfectly well-suited.

Secondly, the film is "visually stunning" (Grazia). Period.

Thirdly, the sound-track is lovely.

Fourthly, and perhaps most importantly of all, this film has the potential to really hit a soft spot with even men. It is not a ladies film, primarily, at all. It is a film about genuine human love. An understanding of the context into which this film has been released will help here. Many of us realise that today's post-modern culture is rapidly losing any true experiencial knowledge of what human love is. The world is crying out for love - real love. It is not to be found anywhere where it is so commonly suggested that it may be found. Love is not lust. It is not merely an attraction, though it can involve an attraction. It is not getting carried away with feelings. Love, in essence, is sacrificial. It is patient. It is kind. It is not self-seeking. It does not boast. It does not envy. Love waits. Love gives. (The Bible has a lot to teach to us concerning the truth about love, 1 Corinthians 13). These are all characteristics of this most coveted of human experiences, but the great majority of us know almost nothing about it. This beautiful piece of cinema does not fail to show its audience at least something which is consistent to true human love.

Fifthly, on the basis of what is written above, I cannot agree with Empire's film review of this movie, that Victoria is "Britain's sexiest royal." Clearly, the purpose of the film was lost upon those who reviewed it.

Overall, a very enjoyable and remarkable film. It is certainly worth another watch. It is not expensive and it might just teach us a thing or two about this great attribute which we desperately need to further understand and seek.

Super performance by this talented young actress. The whole package keeps to the essentials of Victoria's story and moves along cheerfully.

2 out of 5 stars Young Victoria [DVD] [2009]   June 25, 2010

A somewhat wasted opportunity to portray Victoria in her early years. Verging on boring. There will never be a second viewing by me.

3 out of 5 stars okay, not amazing.   June 10, 2010

I came to this movie prepared to love it. I love period dramas, historicals and romances, but I was a bit disappointed. The plot was a bit lacking, but I guessed it had to stay true to real life. The actors all seemed a bit stiff-as if slightly uncomfortable with their acting role. The setting, scenery and costumes were gorgeous, however.
