Story
Players, prepare to profess your allegiance to either Cosmos or Chaos...Cosmos is the goddess of harmony, while Chaos is the god of discord. Reigning from distant realms, the two gods had gathered warriors from all lands to lead them in savage war. At one time Cosmos and Chaos were of equal in strength. It was believed that their conflict would last forever. However, the balance is now broken. Those who answered Chaos' call created an inexhaustible force. And under vicious attack without relent, the warriors fighting for Cosmos started to fall one by one. The conflict that has continued for eons is now about to end in Chaos' favor...The world has been torn asunder, sinking into a vortex of disorder. As for the few surviving warriors… their fates have yet to be determined.

Gameplay
Featuring action very similar to other games in the Final Fantasy series, Dissidia Final Fantasy consists of one-on-one combat either against a human or AI opponent where the goal is to reduces your opponent's hit points to zero. This is done through a series of attacks and battle features which must be balanced against the player's status and that of the opponent faced. In addition, the game also features "EX Mode" which increases the power of existing attacks. This mode can be activated in a variety of ways, both related to combat and chance.

Characters
Dissidia Final Fantasy features characters from both sides of the struggle from each of the games in the Final Fantasy series. Although favorites will soon be found, the storyline of game's main campaign requires players to assume the role of each of these characters at one point or another in order to attain ultimate success. All told the game contains twenty-two total playable characters from Final Fantasy through Final Fantasy X; evenly split between heroes and villains. In addition, players can also look forward to playing as a few secret characters unlockable in the game. Regardless of the character, players will find that each will become more powerful as they gain experience in battle, have access to different costumes and in most cases are able to transform into different physical forms in specific modes. The equipment each wields is also fully customizable.

Key Features:

  • Legacy - Experience the high-quality world and gameplay mechanics of Final Fantasy presented in an action-packed environment where players can glide through the air and dash along walls.
  • All-new battle system - Action-based battle system combines all-out brawling alongside RPG-based character development in an original system developed by the creators of the Kingdom Hearts series.

2 out of 5 stars Boring and repetitive   February 11, 2010
RecklessSpirit (UK)
I have played, completed and loved FFVII to XII + Crisis Core spending hundreds of hours on each and just not being able to get enough of each game. This is the first final fantasy I just haven't been able to get on with - the "chessboard" is really boring and I really struggled to carry on playing and collect each crystal for each character. I had thought that maybe after this the main game would get better, but this has not been the case.

I have played this for about 20/30 hours now and it really isn't enjoyable but I do not want to "leave a final fantasy uncompleted." You wander along chess boards bumping into pieces which you then fight and get to the end to complete the level over-and-over again. I have picked up "Final Fantasy Revenant Wings" now on the DS which I am enjoying and I think I am just going to give up on Dissida now. I have tried both battle systems, but unfortunately this game just has no spark for me at all.

5 out of 5 stars One of the PSP's Top Tier Titles   December 30, 2009
Mr. J. Bain (Concord, NC USA)
I've never been much of a Final Fantasy fan, so I was worried that this game would be little more than glorified fan-service. Thankfully that assumption was without merit, this is one of the most impressive games on the PSP in terms of graphics, innovation, production values and the sheer amount of content available.

It is effectively a 1 on 1 arena fighter consisting of various Final Fantasy characters duking it out in a variety of different stages. Each of the 10 heroes has his own fully fleshed out story mode as well as a larger story called 'Shade Impulse' which can be attempted by any character and changes depending on which character you choose. As well as the intense and cinematic fighting action, there is an incredibly deep system of customisation involving huge amounts of equipment as well as customisable movesets and powers.

The amount of unlockables and additional content in this game is mindboggling. After 40 hours I'm still finding new modes and secrets. The multiplayer is also fantastic and extremely well-implemented. If you get tired of fighting the AI (and at some point you probably will), it's a lot of fun to pit your characters against those of your friends.

While the game suffers slightly from typical Final Fantasy story cliches and dubious voice-acting at times, it's still a must buy for any PSP owner and a very unique and polished experience.

this game was really fun at first and i would advise any final fantasy fan to get it. however be very prepared for anger! this game is incredibly hard at times and has annoying buttons. some movements are static and unless you block at the right time the computer will hit you. overall i would say it was a very fun game just gotta have patience to play
