I was really excited about the prospect of playing another Wild Arms game, especially on my shiny new PSP, but what a disappointment!
If like me you are a big Wild Arms fan, then I would guess that you too will be as let down by this offerring as I am. The game play has been completely changed, being nothing at all like the old Wild Arms games we played and loved so well. I thought Wild Arms 4 was a little bit dodgey with the new battle system, and the lack of a free roaming map, but this is just awful.
Ok Firstly the game plays much more like the Final Fantasy tactics games. The whole game is played in "missions", basically these are battles fought on a grid. Now when I say grid, I don't mean the small grid like on WA4, I mean a huge grid that covers the entire area, which means lots of turns wasted actually getting to your enemy. You can also change the classes of your "units" as they are called in the game (characters), much the same as the FF Tactics games. Unlike the FF Tactics games though, I personally have found this game to be ridiculously hard. I found that during "missions" if even one unit (character) dies, it's game over meaning that you have no choice but to start the entire mission all over again!! I found I was fighting each battle 4 or 5 times before I actually completed the mission.
Also when entering towns, you are not free to wander around town as you would normally be in these games, but instead a menu is brought up from which you can select shops, inns etc so you never actually get to walk around a town or a shop, just a menu which I found irritating. The same goes with the world map. You are not free to wandere around the map as you were in WA3, instead it is more like WA4 in that you point and click where you want to go on the map and you're more or less taken there.
In general I would say if you love the WA series you will be bitterly disappointed in this game and as gutted by it as myself. If you're an avid fan of the FF Tactics series however you might just enjoy it. Having said that, I will happily play FF Tactics but not this game anymore.
I'm afraid, in the end I just gave up on it as it is too hard, has a terrible (and I mean terrible)battle system and completely lacks all the depth and enjoyment of the previous Wild Arms games.
