Having recently aquired a PSP 3000 (Cheers wife!) I find myself for possibly the first time having a well established piece of hardware, with a large back catologue of games. Being a gamer since the early 80s I have usually aquired consoles as they are released and then pick and chose games as they come out, paying full price.
Thanks to never getting around to purchasing the PSP first time, I am now in a nice position where I can pick and choose from a vast selection of games, the majority of which are at a fraction of their original price.
Silent Hill is my first foray into the realms of survival horror/adult gaming on the PSP.

The game starts with a rendered cut scene which is well animated, giving you an introduction to your character and the town. The cut scene then changes to one which is rendered using the in game engine, which while not as pretty as the first cut scene, is still decent for the PSPs graphical limitations.
Your character (Mr Ten-four buddy trucker) then gets his chance to wander about a bit, to the sounds of some Dido-esque intro song.
He eventually reaches the town and it all goes bent from there.

I will not go into the story line but say that the game is divided into two parts, the streets and the buildings. The streets are dividers for the levels which take place in large buildings which act as the 'levels' themselves.
The first 'level' is a hospital. You walk around, solve puzzles, open locked doors until you have a certain item. You then exit and walk the streets to the next 'level' which is an asylum.

While in the buildings you meet ghoulish enemies which are easy to kill at first but then get harder the more you progress, you can slap them about using your hands but a more effective way is using the melee weapons which are scattered around and plentiful.
As you progress you can also pick up guns and ammo which is more effective but less fun than lobbing a bottle of alcohol at a zombie nurse thing and knocking her sparko.

If you are low on health (which is in the usual form of medikits or food) you can just circumnavigate most enemies and run around like a wuss but remember to turn your torch off as it makes you less visible.

So far this is a fun game and has bags of atmosphere, you should be able to pick it up for well under £15 these days to there is no excuse (unless the excuse is you have no money after the credit crunch, and if that is the case, stop reading reviews of psp games and get back to work)

Brilliant! And I've only got as far as confronting the nurse in the hospital!
I have only recently bought the Sony PSP and a friend recommended Silent Hill Origins as the first game to play. Despite still getting used to the buttons on the console itself and then trying to remember what I can press with other buttons, I have found the start of the game very enjoyable indeed! For the moment, I don't think I've hit a red icon which allows me to save my gameplay and so, consequently, I have to start the game from scratch - but it's not a problem. (Does anyone know where the first red icon appears where I can save my game to avoid starting from the beginning?) As soon as the trucker jumps down out of his cab and spots the lonely girl behind him, the action starts. A burning house then offers the first victim and after recovering his consciousness it is time to go to the hospital to see how the fire victim is doing. A doctor (?) standing by the lift offers little help and so it is inevitable the trucker will go to the same floor - enter the featureless nurse from hell! But there's a hammer, a spray of blood and that's as far as I get because the trucker is killed through my negligence! D'oh!
Highly recommended - will definitely be buying the new Silent Hill game when it comes out. Now, about that red icon...

Great film and game series. I had been playing Silent Hill 2 on PC when I saw this PSP version. I can now be scared in bed! Great! I don't generally like 3rd person games but I make an exception for this great series.

...and turn off the lights while you play it with the headphones on.

Silent Hill - back to how it should be; not locked in some room, but wandering around the misty town wondering what the hell is going on. Yes, in places it is more style than substance, but when the style is this good, you can make allowances.

By and large, this is familiar, above all else - the controls, the look, the feel, the types of location. There are some nice twists - the fact that melee weapons are destroyed by use, for example - often half way through a scrap - stop it from being too comfortable.

Although this is not a huge game (about the same length as the first one), there are some really cool bits about it that only come out on replaying. Yes, there are the 'bad' and 'UFO' endings to find, but the real fun is in the accolades. These force you to play the game differently - one involves, for example, no shooting, while to gain another, you have to shoot everything. This adds an impetus to replaying the game - trying to see if you can take out the bosses with only your fists.

Quite a lot of fun.

I have recently played and completed this game on the psp, and can honestly say that it probably only one of a couple of games that have kept me really hooked on this platform. I don't get much time to play games, but every spare minute i had was taken up by playing this game. I have played the first Silent Hill on playstation one, and Silent Hill 2 on playstation 2 and have to play numbers 3 and 4 (i never got the chance to play them!).
This game is set before the first playstation one outing and you feel it borrows heavily from that original title. It has everything that made the series start off so well - the creeping fog swirling around the town (done fantastically well here), the weird creatures lurking around every corner, some excellent cut scenes (among the best seen on the psp), some excellent puzzles, some great locations, brilliant music and effects and of course, a plot that is as labyrinthian as all the others - though obviously it was set before the playstation one game.
You play as Travis, a trucker passing close to Silent Hill. The next thing you find is you are rescuing a mysterious girl from a house fire, before passing out and finding yourself slap bang in the middle of the creepy town. From then on you are pursuing the girl, in an attempt to find out what is going on with her and the weird happenings in the town.
This game really picks the creepiest locations and when you play on it for the first time, you will be saying to yourself 'Oh yes, i know why they picked this place'. You play through parts of the town as usual (and as per usual, lots of the areas have the chasms blocking your path), but also go through a hospital, insane asylum, theatre and a hotel. These locations are scary enough in the normal world of Silent Hill, but when you go into the alternative world they become downright horrific!
Graphically this game is right up there with God Of War:Chains of Olympus and some of the cut scenes really shock you in the quality they produce - they are way above what i have seen on the psp before. But even the in-game graphics are superb. The lighting is excellent, and when you are in the dark scrabbling around you get that real hemmed-in, claustrophobic feel. You really have to play this in the dark and with headphones on (which the loading screen suggests) mainly to add atmosphere to the experience, but also to play this in the bright lights is just impossible as the screen reflects too much light for you to be able to see what you are doing!
Without giving too much away, the plot is very good but does what every other Silent Hill game has ever done - gives you some pointers, and then leaves you wanting more! Frustrating, but a nice way to keep you interested.
All in all it is an excellent game, but like everything it has a few flaws worth mentioning. Firstly, the camera can really get on your nerves, particularly in a cramped location and it usually happens as you walk through a door and know that there is a monster in front of you. But you can't recentre the camera behind you to see where the monster is; you either have to run past it and get it into a position where you can line it up, or get seriously hurt! Once you get into the habit of this, it isn't so bad, but it lets the game down a bit. The other big flaw is the length of the game. I found it really short. I am no great expert in completing games, but i got through this pretty quickly. And i can't decide whether it was because the game is actually short, or it was so good i was left wanting more! And also, the plot lets it down a little; this is meant to be the origin of the Silent Hill story, but you come away feeling less knowledgeable than before! Which is always the way with Silent Hill!
However, these minor gripes aside, i loved every minute of playing this game.

Who would i recommend this too? Certainly not anyone below the rated age it recommends, which is 15. It is VERY violent and very gory too. Don't let anyone play this below the rating. But i would recommend it to anyone who loved the Silent Hill games on playstation one and two - this is a real return to form, and with Silent Hill 5 on it's way on 360 and PS3 this autumn, it will reintroduce you to the whole creepy world of this town. I would also recommend it to anyone who likes survival horror - it is not as action packed as Resident Evil, but it has more atmosphere and better puzzles to get through.

Superb - highly recommended!

A great game on the PSP!
