| Customer Reviews: Some problems, but OK May 24, 2009 A. Goran (London) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought a UK version of this game today. I have played it for several hours now and I'm only two missions in. Not because I don't have any skill, but because the game's overrun with dialogue! It's infected the whole game, do yourself a favour and don't talk to any NPCs, if the ringing "confirmation" sound doesn't drive you mad, the dialogue pop-ups certainly will. Sure, I can turn the sound off, but then I won't hear the English voice overs of the main dialogues.
I think I've figured out the problem, this game is too slow paced and story driven for my liking..
Pros: Very good fighting system, hordes of customisable weapons, clothes, armour, effects.. etc.
Cons: The confirmation sound can't be disabled, it will ring in your ears hours later.

I couldn't wait for this one to come out so I imported it from Japan. I don't read Japanese so I've had a merry old time working out what the heck the different options are, how to equip gear, how to add party members and so on... but it's still a blast.
For anyone who played and loved PSO on the PS2, Gamecube or XBox or anyone who enjoyed Phantasy Star Universe, then this is an absolute must-buy.
Lots of loot, lots of mobs to kill, lots of grinding of the same areas (you either love this or hate it - in which case you won't have liked PSO either) and lots of stats to improve. It's a Diablo-clone at heart but with very pretty third-person graphics and the lovely Sega Phantasy Star sheen - the character design is great, there are lots of different weapons, the sound effects are excellent, the music is very impressive... it's all almost uniformly polished to the highest degree.
I was surprised at the amount of pop-up when roaming around outdoors, but it doesn't affect the gameplay in any way.
It's not particularly hard. I'm flying blind because I can't understand the language - I don't even know if I'm a warrior, hunter or force user (!) but I'm not having much difficulty in getting through the levels.
Very highly recommended. Well done Sega - but why on earth is it taking so long for this game to be localised for the West?
As an aside, this game was a big hit in Japan despite being on the PSP largely because it offers the same sort of multiplayer monster-killing fun that Monster Hunter Freedom offers. MHF is MASSIVE in Japan. Phantasy Star Portable is excellent - I'm really enjoying it - but make no mistake: Monster Hunter Freedom is more polished, prettier, and crucially a much deeper and far more exciting gameplay experience. And the MHF monsters are much, much better. So do go out an pick up Phantasy Star Portable - it's great - but if you like this sort of game and you haven't played MHF or MHF2, then pick them up too, because they're the best games on the PSP system (in my humble opinion) and you're in for a treat!
