Average September 2, 2010 Hunter I got this game as I love the other GTA games. But I just couldn't get into it, I just love the other GTA gaming style better. I just think it's a step back not forward.
Review of GTA:Chinatown Wars August 14, 2010 Nicola GTA started as a top down view video game which was annoying and still is a bit but this time it isnt as bad as its not fully on top its sort of on a slant as you can still see the back of the cars a bit it and the graphics are great especially the shading the game also features a lot of mini games like:
.making molotov cocktails using gas
.searching through garbage bins
.breaking into cars
etc
it also has a lot of missions and for the first time the ability to buy and sell drugs and buy cars
over all this is a great game but the top down view spoils it
I recomend this to anyone who is a GTA fan and who spends a lot of time on their psp
altogether I give this a 4/5
Good July 26, 2010 C. Martins (Portugal) Good but not to be played in this platform (PSP), it deserves a large screen...
Best GTA game for handhelds June 25, 2010 G. Heywood (United Kingdom) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have spent a lot of time playing PSP games included GTA:LS Stories and GTA:VC Stories. Both of which I really enjoyed. VC Stories in particular was excellent fun. However, Chinatown Wars beats them both hands down.
Yes, it is different. It is top-down rather than 3D. The graphics are not as good and you need to be more forgiving with the controls (since it was based on the DS version), but it is just so much fun. You still have all the little odd-jobs (taxi's, police cars, tattoo studios etc), but you get random side missions, drug-dealing, and even just driving around the city is great.
The "wanted level" system has been re-done so you now need to destroy police cars to decrease it. This can be insanely frustrating, but is generally just a lot of fun (funny, I seem to using that word a lot in this review!!).
There is no spoken dialogue, but the music (specific to each boss) makes up for it, as does the great cartoon style art work. There are no songs on the soundtrack (like on previous games), which I was concerned about, but again, the stations provided do the job well. A custom soundtrack ability would be nice, but hey, this game is great without it.
One of the biggest problems with the previous GTA games for me was that it seemed more about beating the controls than the game. Some of the mission were easy in principle (shooting snipers on a roof or blowing up cars from a helicopter) but the game never allowed granular enough control to do the job effectively. This is not a problem on this version and is a huge improvement. The missions are generally easier, but the hard missions are tough because they are long and you have a lot to do, not because it is difficult to control the item (gun, car, etc) on the PSP (and I remember similar insane problems on the PS2).
This game is NOT a new version of the previous GTA handheld games. If you expect that, you will be disappointed. If you go in looking for a GTA done differently, I am sure you will love it.
Just buy it.
Rockstar does it again! May 8, 2010 Tinrib72 (London, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First off, I have played other GTA games for the PSP and whilst they do have 'proper' 3D (Chinatown is still 3D, but from an overhead view)and real music, I found this to be the more engrossing title.
In fact the lack of spoken cutscenes and proper music meant that I could play this at work withound having the sound up too loud and still follow the storyline.
When I first loaded up I thought that the overhead view would be an annoyance but it didnt seem to be unless you were travelling under a train track and bumped into the unseen police car who would then give chase...
Anyhoo, loads to do. I spent a lot of the time looking for hidden street races and making a lot of cash with drug deals which had nothing to do with the story.
Get it!
