Story
Alex Mercer was once a scientist for the prominent medical research corporation, Gentek, but one day he wakes up to find himself a shape-shifter with absolute mastery over his genetic structure, but no memory of how this came to be. Taking to the streets of New York City in search of answers, he quickly encounters a web of lies and vows to rip the truth from those who have hidden it from him and the world.

A few other things that Alex also learns quickly is that he is not alone in possessing amazing abilities, that there is a secret war brewing in New York City and he is on its front lines. A deadly infection has spilled out of control and the government has seized the media to stop the spread of information and has placed New York under quarantine as martial law is instated; igniting a firestorm of combat, carnage and death. As he roams the city, he faces an ever growing army of infected creatures warped and changed by the virus. As it spreads, the virus overwrites the genetics of those it infects, warping and changing their form into something else, something that seems to have been planned. The answers he seeks appear to be tied to the virus, so he rushes to discover the truth behind it, but standing against him and his goal is Project Blackwatch. An elite army specialist force, they are tasked with halting the spread of the virus at any cost and are eager to bring Alex in dead or alive to determine his connection to it. It would seem that they are potentially both enemy and ally to Alex's cause. Will Alex assist Blackwatch in its hunt, or join forces with the virus and subjugate humanity, pushing his powers to the limit as the genetic shackles of humanity fall by the wayside? That choice is up to the player in Prototype.

Gameplay
In Prototype players engage in 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay. This allows gamers the choice to either blend in with the population and covertly progress through the story, or fully unleash Alex’s powers, and move through New York City like a walking slaughterhouse, taking control of military vehicles, and causing destruction at every turn.

Although Alex is literally strong enough to fling people and large objects around easily, his most intriguing power is his ability to 'consume' people. In doing this he acquires their memories, abilities, and their appearance. New memories help him to solve the mystery of how he got the way he is, while new appearances allow him to shape-shift into new useful forms at will and abilities allow him to manoeuvre in parts of the game requiring specific skills in specific situations. In addition, Alex's consumption of people also facilitates his ability to transform his physical body and manipulate his senses. Most weapons acquired in this way are outgrowths from his appendages like exaggerated blades, shields, whips and claws used for brutal close combat, but consumption also allows for powerful abilities like thermal vision, which provides for vision through smoke and obstacles, as well as 'infected vision' with which Alex can detect hotspots of viral infection throughout the city.

Key Features:

  • Fast and Deadly Combat - Shape-shift your body to the situation at hand ... from claws to blades to hammers to whips, as you choose the right weapon for the situation. Change to shield or armour for defence or use advanced sensory powers (thermal vision, infected vision) to track your enemies.
  • Over-the-top Locomotion - Seamlessly and fluidly bound from building to building, run up walls, bounce off cars and everything in your path. Adaptive parkour lets you move freely through the open-world environments of New York City.
  • Unique Disguising Abilities - Consume anyone at anytime, take on their appearance and assume their memories and special abilities.
  • Deep Conspiracy Driven Storyline - Wake up with no memory of the past ... just mysterious powers and a link to a town in Idaho. Delve into the mysteries of your origin, the true nature of your power and your part in a conspiracy 40 years in the making.
  • Parkour Inspired In-game Movement - Alex Mercer's movements are inspired by Parkour, a mostly urban activity bordering on both art and martial arts that aims at moving the human body from one point to another as smoothly, efficiently and quickly as possible. Recent examples of it gained worldwide attention in chase scenes in the 2007 film "Casino Royale."
  • Xbox LIVE Achievements - Collect a wealth of Xbox LIVE achievements and build your gamer score as you play.

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive button basher   September 1, 2010
Michael Sutherland
You are Alex Mercer. Waking up on a slab in a lab, you have no idea what has happened or what is going on. In your escape, you discover superhuman powers, tied into the mysterious release of a mutating virus working its way through Manhattan.

Alex has both the power to disguise himself, jump a long way and glide, but also to grow claws, a huge blade, pounding dumb-bell type fists and armour, as well as heat vision and the ability to detect virus-infected creatures. He's hugely more powerful than many of the enemies you'll encounter, and at first, this sense of power is quite cool.

You'll enjoy running up the sides of tall buildings, floating gently down or simply falling down and staying unharmed as the impact crater around you spreads. Killing soldiers, passers by and even tanks is easy, and quite satisfying.

Unfortunately, I enjoyed the game less and less as it went on. It quickly becomes formulaic - and it's a bad formula. In some ways it feels a lot like Red Faction: Guerilla, as the game philosophy is very much along the lines of 'more is better' - so the game will throw three tanks at you in quick succession, or five hunter mutants, or three helicopters. It quickly turns into a button basher with little regard for skill. It's also a bit repetitive - whilst there are strategic 'protect this' or 'take out these select targets' missions, you'll quite quickly get detected and have to resort to tactics of mass destruction. The missions are also usually segmented into three sections which are virtually identical (although of increasing difficulty).

You can't seem to save mid-mission, rather like Bayonetta, so once you've started a mission, you'll want to finish it or you'll have to start again. Most of the bosses are ok, although one will have you grinding your teeth in annoyance.

The sound is ok - I didn't really notice the music being anything special and there's the usual round of swishes, chops and screams of bystanders are you puree them. The graphics aren't amazing - most of the city looks fairly similar. The combos tend to be quite annoying - I ended up using just one or two, as some of them need you to press fairly unlikely or unmemorable combos (X and B for instance. Who can press X and B together?)

Overall, good concept, but poor execution. The game is of a good length, but I couldn't wait to finish it.

4 out of 5 stars Prototype   June 11, 2010

Prototype. Oddly e nough, I think of comics when I think of this game. Specifically, Marvel Comics. The claw weapon upgrade that I currently use (being only a few missions in) are very much Wolverine-like, and the tendrils are rather Venom-esque.

Yet, if you think this is a comic-based game, you're wrong. Very wrong. The first bit of gamplay puts you smack bang in the middle of New York City with a whole horde of Infected and Military, all thinking one thing: KILL ALEX MERCER. Fortunately, you have a whole arsenal of weapons to utilise, such as aforemention claws (which are as long as my forearm!) or blades (which are as long as my whole arm!) and so on and so forth. Cue bloodbath. The ease of the way the combat works could be described as too simple by some, but I like it. The camera is good - I've not had any problems with it so far - and the movement controls are pretty good too, even if I do get reminded of the Incredible Hulk, jumping around and generally trashing a city - I sometimes end up falling off buildings, but seeing as you literally don't get a scratch from falling a billion feet, no harm done. The story is immersive, and while I have my issues with certain exploding water towers, it's an interesting way to make a somewhat routine mission that bit more interesting.

Overall, this is a very good game, and well worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Anyone for Carnage?   March 8, 2010

Sweet. Jesus. How to describe a game where you can kill an old lady, eat her, take on her identity, run up the nearest skyscraper and then elbow drop off the top on to the horrified and confused onlookers below? Sound fun? Cause that's only the beginning of the carnage in probably the most over the top insane game i have ever had the joy to play.
Are you the kind of person who, when playing GTA, treats the missions as kind of a side project, preferring mindless destruction instead? Well this is a bit like that, on steroids, in the middle of an apocalypse, and you've got super powers, and a bats**t mental moral compass. In short. Amazing.
Of course all this would count for nothing if the game itself was crap. But it's not.
The game looks good. The story is fine. The controls don't get in the way and the sub-missions are satisfying and challenging. The game is more than proficient in all these area's without really excelling but then again, when you can throw cars at helicopters who really cares.
If this sounds like your kind of thing then buy it. Buy it now and you will be happily bathed in blood and showered in scattered limbs for weeks to come. Lovely

5 out of 5 stars Great game   March 2, 2010

I love this game, I just got addicted and I can't stop playing it. :D

4 out of 5 stars literally a killer game..   February 22, 2010
R. Mathew (London)
This game is amazing.. that should be enough description really.
The game follows the life of Alex Mercer. a man with no memory of his life but instead god like powers. He wakes up in a morgue and kills his way to the truth about how he got there. On the way amassing powers that start with super strength to wolverine blades to a wicked Scythe arm. Run up walls, glide, hijack military vehicle, consume any living organism. And then theres the devastator attacks hes got. just youtube it. watch him burst out in a cloud of angry spikes that kills most everything around him.
Theres the main storyline and side games (events) where you have to achieve medals. took me 20 hrs just to go through the story mode because of it as i was gunning for the event EPs.

40 achievements on xBox 360.
No online-play mode.
No addons yet.

A real entertainer but once you put in 60 odd hours (like me) it gets pretty repetitive. Massive amounts of blood and gore
