Amazon.co.uk Review
For over a decade now fans have been wondering just what a team-up between Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog would be like. Everything from traditional platform games to complex role-playing titles have been suggested, but it's fair to say nobody imagined that it would finally happen in the form of an athletics simulator. It's officially licensed from the 2008 Beijing Olympics though (Sega already had the license for their own more traditional tie-in) and contains all the usual events you'd expect including the 100m sprint, swimming, judo, table tennis, hammer throwing and archery. Sega have even been talking about using the new Wii Zapper controller for a spot of clay pigeon shooting. More than twenty-five characters from both universes will be playable in the game, including not just Mario and Sonic but also Luigi, Tails, Yoshi, Knuckles, Bowser, Doctor Eggman, Princess Peach and Amy. Other characters will have cameos as judges such as Cream the Cat and Toad. You'd expect some characters to be naturally better at some sports than others but each has their own strengths and weakness, with even Sonic's incredible speed mitigated by his slow acceleration. The whole game is developed by Sega but overseen by legendary Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto, with full tournament and missions modes as well as online leaderboards for all the different events. The name may sound like an April Fool's joke at first but this crossover could well be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Harrison Dent

Boring gameplay, a simplistic children's game. August 21, 2010 Benjamin Dover (UK) Make no mistake, this game is for children. Since it's quite popular and a bestseller, you may think it lives up to Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort, however I was sorely disappointed. The gameplay is simplistic and relies on the player figuring out tricks to win rather than developing skills as in Wii Sports.
marion & sonic at olympic games July 25, 2010 R. Mycock Great game. I bought this for my husband for some fun on the Wii and we all absolutely adore it. Such a selection and so much fun when friends and neighbours come round.
Very disappointing April 21, 2010 Twilight princess (London, uk) I can't believe all the good reviews this game has got. I was really disappointed when I got this game as I had read the rave reviews and also own and enjoy most mario titles. Like another reviewer said for total playtime there is little gameplay, you have to go through lots of instructions (which aren't always clear),winners celebrations and there is a lot of option screens although there isn't that many games.
Another reason I brought this game was I thought the wi-fi meant you could play with others other the internet like on mario kart and smash brawl but all the wi-fi does is rank scores, whats the point!
The games themselves are varied but again gameplay is short and controls not always straightforward. The graphics don't look as good as other wii games and overall not very enjoyable.
FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! April 6, 2010 Jack, age 8 (England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is fabules great superb! Great game! Must buy now wahoo buy it buy it! Best 10 got to 3! buy this or you will have nothing eles in your life to think about. You know the top 10 it counts DVDs in to. Its great!
Better than Wii Sports, but not all that good February 28, 2010 Claire Eriks (UK) I gave this three stars because even though I, personally, do not particularly enjoy this game. It was fun for the first few days and when playing with friends, but it started to get boring very quickly.
The selection of mini-games is good, and it's interesting to find out a bit more about the olympics, but most of the actual games are pretty dull.
Perhaps Dream fencing, Dream race, Trampolining and Swimming (at a push) are the "good" games that I particularly favor. While it may sound like quite a lot, it really isn't that much. Archery is pretty much impossible, Rowing made my whole arm ache and my shoulder hurt for days afterwards, and the running games are just impossible to me. I don't know why, but I never seem to be able to get any characters I play as to run fast! I move the nunchuk and wiimote quickly, it doesn't work, I move them slowly, it doesn't work, I flick my wrists a lot, it doesn't work, I keep my wrists stiff, it doesn't work.
Yes, this game does have some good points - the graphics are actually quite good, and I loved the selection of characters possible and the mini-games kept my interest for a while. But it wasn't really worth the £40 I paid for it.
I'd recommend buying this game if you aren't intending to play it often, have a good few people to play it with and like either Mario or Sonic characters (or, even better, both).
The only reason I'm glad I got this particular game was because I learnt that Sport genre games aren't really my type of game, and this game did have a few games I did enjoy.
