1 out of 5 stars Tedious I'm Afraid   January 7, 2009
I. Brooks (England)
Ok, I recently bought this game for my new PSP, at first I thought the graphics were great, the controls seemed simpler than they appeared on the list and I was looking forward to a good game.
Then I came up against the first challenging puzzle, which, to be fair, wasn't at all that challenging... in theory.

In practice, the controls of this game are frightening. There is far too much time spent resetting your camera view because the game doesn't do it for you and, as said previously, when running in a straight line is difficult, trying to stay on a narrow ledge, while not impossible, is so frustrating it hurts.

There is no side step control either, so if you want to peek round a corner, you have to come out of your first-person mode, turn, step, turn back, re-enter first person mode. Its soul destroying. In the end, I didn't finish this game. Not even the first level. And its disappointing because I was so looking forward to playing it.

This game is like playing a wonderfully illustrated, designed and conceived gem of an adventure while trying to stay balanced on a giant ball. Eidos took a fantastic game and then did their best to stop everyone from enjoying it.
Rent it and see what I mean.

1 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at, terrible to play!   October 12, 2008

I bought this game over a year ago, but I got so fed up and frustrated playing it, that I just put it to one side and forgot about it. Now, over a year since I put it down, I thought I'd pick it up and try again, and now I remember all too clearly why I put it down. In fact I'm so frustrated with it, this is one of the few times I'm moved to write a review on Amazon, even for an old game!

By PSP standards, the graphics in this game are stunning. Huge vistas, deep lakes, massive tombs. I didn't find the normal combat too difficult (or think there was necessarily too much of it like some other reviewers). I found the puzzles relatively easy once you get used to things to look for - I'd suggest playing through Croft Manner before venturing out into the real world!

But, and this is a huge but, the camera, movement and controls of this game outweigh anything good in the game by a hundred to one! Now I love first person shooters and adventure games, and I must admit I'm more of a PC gamer, but I've played my fair share on the PSP too, and this is by far the worst.

We all know the camera sweeps all over the place in Tomb Raider, and while you can control it on the PSP it's so difficult, it's a nightmare. Try positioning it, let he button go and it will move off on its own. The only time it's vaguely of any use is if you have plenty of time to stand around working out which platform or pole to jump to. In a combat situation, forget it it's at best useless and at worst can stop you beating bosses.

Movement is even worse. There is no strafe (which to my mind is absolutely critical in this kind of game), and although Lara can walk and creep, making it happen on the PSP requires such a delicate touch of the analog stick that it might as well not be there, ergo you end up running everywhere whether you want to or not, which can be very tricky on a two foot ledge. Hold the button to move the camera and Lara will actually do a quarter turn too - not just the camera. You'll also find yourself running in one direction, the camera angle will decide to change, and suddenly you're running in an entirely different direction, e.g. off a platform or cliff. The directions that the analog stick represents is so dependent on the current camera angle that Unless you're in a corridor with nothing else around, even running in a straight line in this game is hard.

Lastly controls. Trying to cram all the control onto a PSP is no mean feat, but even so, it could have been done so much better I think. Want to stop and change weapons in the middle of combat - release R1 (holster gun, 1 second), press L1 to bring up inventory (1 second), press left or right arrow to select guns (1 second), with weapons holstered press up arrow to change weapon, press R1 again to draw weapon and start firing again (1 second) - forget it, you've lost targeting by now and you will get nailed. Want to stop shooting and throw a grenade, same process. In normal combat, just jumping about and holding R1 with the pistols works fairly well, but against a boss forget it (and there is more than one - I'm only at level 5 and I've already battled Takamoto and Rutland, which makes me think some of these other reviewers haven't even played the game).

To sum up how bad it is, I'll leave you with this thought. I contacted Stella at tombraiders.net. This is obviously someone who loves Tomb Raider. A lot. Her dedication to it is obvious from the web site. Her words were "I have to admit I only played about 10 minutes of Legend on the PSP before I got utterly frustrated and gave up".

It's bad. Let's say no more and never speak of it again!

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but very short.   December 30, 2007
matthew_panton (IoW)
This game is very short, eight levels (Well, seven plus a boss-fight). Also, Like all TR games since II, Lara spends more time gunning people down than actually, y'know, raiding tombs. I don't have any objection to shooting games, I've put in time in various GTA editions and Doom clones, but that's what I want from Tomb Raider.

The story is entertaining, and there are a couple of really stunning visual moments (Lara: muses on the possibility of going into the postcard busnies at one point). However, the levels are short and liniar. There is one path through each and you will never get lost - although some of the puzzles are extremely non-obvious.

Graphically, This game runs the PSP's cpu at 222mhz and it shows. There are several parts that suffer from slowdown, and the graphics are not as good as they could have been if the cpu could run at full tilt. Load times are also annoyingly long. Load times are especialy inffuritaing when one is forced to re-play one of several extremely difficult jumping-sets, one will spend more time watching the load bar than re-trying the jump-sequence. These sequences themselves are only difficult because of the poor camera controls, and the slightly non-responsive movement controls. One can never be completely confident that Lara will actually do whatever it is one wants - and when split-second timing is required, this is fatal.

The game does have good points, a fun storyline, a very sensible non-bottomless backpack, a ton of secrets and unlockables (although they only ad maybe 100% to the game's short lifespan) and, when you can get the controls to work, Lara moves nicely, with a couple of new acrobatic tricks to her repetior. It is a fun, albeit throwaway game. Don't pay full price for it.

3 out of 5 stars How can this be Lara Croft   November 17, 2007
Farook Razzak (Lanzarote, Spain)
I actually played this game after first having played thru TR Anniversary. With so many RPG games on the market I had drifted away from the series after being disappointed with angel of darkness.

If you are or were a tomb raider fan you will absolutely adore Anniversary, but as for Legend. Well, the kindest thing I can say about it is that you leave it on the shelf.

The game has Lara in way, way too many confrontational roles, against soldiers and arch enemies, whom she has to kill. She has to kill them all with her range of weapons that include grenades and grenade launchers. Since when was Lara such a coldblooded killer. Then there's the pointless shooting runs on the motorbike.

The graphics are average and the shooting sequences are very irritating as the lock on circle is so large it's all you really get to see and shoot, unless you can get up real close to the enemies, which isn't often.

Then there's the constant chatter from one of Lara's aides who is speaking to her through a headset. God, that's annoying.

I guess after playing TR Anniversary which I give 10/10 (but that's another review), I was expecting something more along that vein.

In fact after I had got about half way through the game and with yet another load of villains to slaughter in a level ending showdown, I gave up in disgust.

I'm sure many will enjoy the game, just not this Lara fan.

5 out of 5 stars The best psp game i have played so far!   June 28, 2007

I always liked Lara croft games but in the past never really knew what to do and could never complete them. This game was great I hadn't tried playing tomb raider in years and jumped at the chance for one with better graphics. It is by far the best game I have played on the psp that is the first time you play it and this is including the beloved gta games. The story to it was great and got me hooked, the actual levels and trails were great too and so incredibly fun! I loved every minute of the game with the exception of the bit that got me stuck for a month in "King Arthur's Tomb". The only faults it has is the storyline end was really pretty anti climatic and a bit of a let down (but don't worry the sequel is supposed to remedy this!) and once you finish the storyline bit that's it for the new bits unless you haven't done all the trails. Oh some people might not like the QTEs (Quick Time Events) but there cool once you get used to them.
It's a really good game whether you are familiar with Lara croft or not!
