5 out of 5 stars Classic RPG fare   July 23, 2007
Mr. D. J. Read (Alnwick, Northumberland United Kingdom)
You could never accuse this game of originality. The plot is hackneyed, the character development (with blooming love stories) is cliched, and some of the twists (concerning Shizel and Meredy) are blatantly obvious.
That said, this is by far the single best game I have played to date on the P.S.P. It harks back to that golden age of R.P.Gs on the 16 bit systems, such as 'Secret Of Mana', and it has much of their charm. The graphics are hardly stunning, but they are beautiful and appropriate in that cartoony, colourful manner that is so fitting for this game type.
The battle system is original, and dynamic, no more of that whole standing still while a time bar fills up business. It has been said that this game is better than FFVII. Well, it isn't but if you like the FF series then you will surely love this.
There are numerous extras, glorious towns to interact, a solid, if unoriginal plot, and most importantly, it is a long game. You're talking 60+ hours, and even then lots of extras to explore. If you have a P.S.P, if you like R.P.Gs, (or even if you don't) this is a must have.
Oh, one thing, I would shop around, the Amazon price is a bit steep to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Good? You bet!   April 23, 2007

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. I think someone at Namco took a look at Final Fantasy VII, picked all the best elements and then crafted them into a different story. It works very well, and although it would probably look quite dated (now) on the latest full-size console, it's perfect for a pick-up-put-down PSP game.

Good points:

Around 50-60 hours of gameplay
Engaging plot about the struggle to stop two worlds colliding
Blend of fantasy/sci-fi elements
Some laugh-out-loud jokes (embarrassing if you're on a bus)
6 characters with different weapons and skills
Control over battles with special skills, magic, summons and combos
Two world-maps with vehicles to explore land and undersea areas
Puzzles
Mini-games (from cards to naval fights)
Some catchy tunes
Optional sub-quests
Optional "hardcore" bosses
Can save at any time and load times are fast

Bad points:

Without online guides I would not have known about a lot of "extras" and would have had great difficult winning the final battle.
Can require some "twitchy" reflexes to get the right buttons pressed at the right time - including during the aforementioned final battle.

Conclusion:
If you're an RPG fan and have a PSP then you would be silly not to get this title.

5 out of 5 stars One of the PSP's greatest   March 5, 2007

I adored this game -- until I found this, I'd worried that I'd make a mistake in purchasing a PSP, since I mostly spend my gaming time playing RPGs. But 'Tales of Eternia' never disappointed -- it's suitably challenging for a handheld title without being so impossible that I had to resort to guides at every turn. Interesting story -- the usual kids-save-the-world, but with a twist -- and characters who are better than your average RPG teens. After this, I can't wait for the version of 'Tales of Symphonia' coming to the PSP! (Although the GBA version is certainly worth checking out, too...) Namco's Tales of... series is definitely worth a look if you like RPGs, and this one is a great place to start.

Great game, highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great RPG   December 28, 2006

I struggled to find my first good RPG on the PSP. I looked through Amazon and saw a couple of token titles that seemed to have been released to supplement the shortfall of RPG titles on the PSP and I am not one to buy a game on a whim (money don't grow on trees you know).

So after reading the reviews it was with some trepidation that I purchased 'Tales of Eternia'. It was a long game, which I loved, with a great storyline, which to me is imperative for a passable RPG and most of all it was fun.

The combat controls are easy, there are no problems with camera angles and the graphics are colourful and hark back to the days of the enjoyable PSone titles I remember playing and loving.

Great game and one of the better RPGs on the PSP to date, recommended.

Just a great game! Am a die hard of final fantasy games and didn't find this one offensive to my RPG sensibilities at all. Finally a game that makes me happy to own a PSP.
