Real Rallying December 12, 2007 FJH410K (United Kingdom) Forget the arcade rubbish, forget the other cars. In a rally you're competing against the road. I've done most of the stages shown in this simulator in real life and believe me this is just what they're like. Game is too crude a word for this one, this is a true simulator.
Still The Best In Class March 12, 2007 Northern Warrior (Swindon, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I played this game to death when it first came out in 1999/2000 and it was a real pleasure to discover Revival have reissued it for Windows XP, as the original W98 copy no longer worked on my PC. Rally Championship (RC) remains the best type of game in the genre, other rally simulations have come and gone but this has never been bettered. Be prepared for a long haul when you enter the main WRC simulation. There are six events each containing six individual stages. These are authentically modelled on the real rally, so for a 15 mile stage be prepared to take up to 15 or 20 minutes to complete the drive. The graphics are still impressive (though of course it is apparent much of the scenery is generated through use of backdrops) and on today's PC's can be enjoyed in full 1280 x 1024 glory with a decent graphics card. I did experience a few problems with the sound on this version, mainly the engine cutting in and out as if the programme is not mixing the effects correctly, but that could be a by-product of my cheap and nasty on board sound card. RC offers considerable scope for strategy. Not only do you have to set up your car for the stages ahead, you also need to keep the car in reasonable shape for the next stage. Only limited repair time is available so can you live without second gear on the next leg as a trade off for repairing the brakes and lights to pass the roadworthiness test? One of the best features of RC over its peers is that you don't have to place in the top of the group to continue to the next stage. You can place dead last on every stage and still advance through the game. Most refreshing compared to other titles in this genre which have you cursing, spitting and left frustrated when you can't place high enough to advance. Of course, if you want access to the better cars then you have to win...but that's another matter. However on some of the stages it is hard to see how the AI can better your performance. In conclusion this is an excellent motorsport title and it is nice to see it perpetuated.
Simply one of the best Rally games ever made December 17, 2005 Mr. P. Julian (Cornwall) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
For some reason there's about 5 different versions of this on Amazon, only one with reviews though, so I thought I'd spread the word about this awesome title. It came out in 2000 yet the graphics still impress today, thanks to the painstaking attention to detail gone in to every track (and there are many, and they are long, some pushing 25 minutes). This isn't an easy game, in fact I rarely got anywhere on the championships, but it's great as a pick up and play Rally game with some great locations and cars. The handling is easy to get to grips with, but the courses take a long time to master. This isn't hardcore like Richard Burns', but it is a lot harder than the semi-arcade Colin McRae games. The game also has an 'arcade' mode, which basically allows you to race against AI drivers on any of the courses available. Few Rally games have this option and it's welcome. Likewise, you can race against friends in split-screen mode. Whilst it is far from the most realistic Rally games to play, it's one of the most realistic and beautiful to look at, and one of the most entertaining as well. Every Rally fan should have this game.
