Amazon.co.uk Review
New system, new Star Wars adventure. LucasArts' no-brainer approach to the PlayStation 2 looks great and plays even better. Star Wars Starfighter is m odelled after LucasArts' long-running flight-sim series. Thankfully, the game is fully loaded with plenty of vehicles from the Star Wars universe--which should put e arly fears to rest that the game would only include a few Episode 1 vehicles. On the PlayStation 2, this game looks incredible. The terrain detail is breathtakin g, with long distances stretching out between you and the horizon. The environments ar e quite varied from the looks of things, with fighting taking place both within a plan et's atmosphere and in the lonely recesses of space. Since it's a console game, the co ntrols are very simplistic, yet sport some interesting features. Players can freely sw itch between highlighted targets and can use a zoom lens to easily take out all droid invaders.

The cinematic sequences stitched throughout the game are brought to life with sharp, real-time cut-scenes, and all of Starfighter's effects are light-y ears ahead of anything you've previously seen on a console.

This PlayStation 2 Star Warsflight game demonstrates the best use yet of the high-profile license. Pu tting players in the pilot seat of a TIE fighter or an X-Wing is sure to answer the fa ntasies of millions-upon-millions of dedicated fans. --Todd Mowatt

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but too easy.   May 1, 2002

I'll cut to the chase, this game is an enjoyable star wars based romp, which now that it's gone platinum, is worthy of anyones PS2 collection. But I have one great criticism of it, which is that although the game puports to have 3 different difficulty levels, there is actually no difference in difficulty that I could detect. Maybe Im just too good at it, but I doubt that. Quite simply, you can complete the game in about 5 or 6 hours if you put your mind to it and get to grips with it quickly. But eventually it does get repetitive and once the intitial euphoria at the opening music dies off,it gets tedious, much like the film it is based on. All in all then, certainly buy it if you're into Star Wars, and probably buy it if you've got some spare cash kicking around.

This will be a short review. This game was a great game when it was full price. Now it's out on Platinum, it is a must buy if you don't have it. The gameplay can be quite simple, but it's great finger twitching stuff, and it's Star Wars flavour!! Excelent stuff once again from Lucus Arts.

4 out of 5 stars Worth trying game   March 28, 2002

Star Wars: Starfighter was one of the earlier PS2 games and has the distinction of being the first Star Wars-themed game to appear on the system. Taking place simultaneously with the events in the Star Wars: Episode I film, Starfighter put you in the role of three different characters created specifically for the game. Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter is the sequel to the original Star Wars: Starfighter game, which has since made appearances on the Xbox and PC. The new game continues the story of Nym, one of the original characters, and drops the other two in favor of a new character, Adi Gallia, a Jedi Master with force powers. By dropping the two other characters, LucasArts has narrowed the storyline down to Nym and Adi and has put more focus on them by giving you more time with each. The new storyline can be quite engaging, and while the game plays very similarly to the original, a number of improvements have been made. That's not to say that the game is without its own share of flaws, however.
One of the most noteworthy aspects of Jedi Starfighter is that the events in the game occur simultaneously with those that take place in the Episode II movie. This will probably be important to a fair number of Star Wars fans, seeing as the game will be released two months prior to the film. Many will undoubtedly pick this game up while hoping to catch a glimpse of the events in the movie, and for the most part, they won't be disappointed. Not only will they be able to interact with a few of the characters in the movie, but they'll also pick up a number of hints that are dropped throughout the game. They'll also be able to fly a number of ships that, as of this writing, have been viewed only in the Episode II movie trailers officially released by Lucasfilm.

2 out of 5 stars When are they gonna make a good StarWars game?   March 28, 2002

It's not a hideous game it just isn't good. I love Starwars. Shock horror! So do 300 million other people. But I know I'm not alone when I say to the game makers of this world "stop feeding off a named franchise, and make a game worthy of the title".

First I have to start out and say that I have been waiting to play this game for a long, long, (I am talking eons) time now. I am one of those Star Wars fans who have seen each one a combined total of in the 400 times range. But those of you who play this game will understand that a true Star Wars fan knows no limits which is what this game is all about..the sky is not the limit, only the starting point!

As the infamous first strains of the Star Wars theme song come on I can feel the rise of goosebumps on my playing arm. I know that I am in for the gameplay of my life! You are first treated to a film clip, which is done in first class style. The clip introduces you to the storyline of the game in full detail, explaining on what you must accomplish and how you will be accomplishing it. One thing I must point out here is just how well the introduction is done.

The game has 14 main missions in addition to bonus ones and each mission must be successfully completed before you can unlock the next mission.

You will be given 3 different starfighters to choose from to accomplish your missions and each starfighter has its own cockpit display as well as targeting mission. All have main Laser guns and secondary weapons. Which ones will depend on the ship you choose as well as where you are in the game. The diversity in starfighters in second to none and each one gives you a different play of the game. One thing I have to point out here is the two views you have to choose from. You can either choose the view of the pilot looking out of your fighter window or as the view of the starfighter flying in front of you. Make sure you try each one as each offers its own unique view of gameplay.

Your first mission is called the Proving Ground and believe me you will find yourself proving to yourself that you can fly this fighter! Even the most die-hard gamers will find that this phase is not quite as easy to conquer as it sounds. I thought hey, who needs a proving ground I could fly this baby with my eyes closed. Trust me, my eyes were opened quickly as I found myself bouncing of canyon wall to canyon wall. This phase will help you to gain good solid skills when it comes to complete control of your ship and good steady flying.

Other missions include escorting the Queen of Naboo safely to negotiations with the Trade Federation. Back up with your fighter crew will ensure safe delivery through hyperspace jump. Another will find Vana Sage taking a job testing a new Droid fighter, Scarab class. Vana gets the job done but lo and behold the Trade Federation decides not to pay him. Revenge time? Pay back time? You bet and it is done by...well, you have to play to find out but I promise you will not be disappointed!
