Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Preview
Shadow the Hedgehog is not necessarily the game you'd expect Sega to make after the stunning success of games such as Sonic Heroes and Sonic Mega Collection. Although it looks and plays fairly similarly to the former, albeit with only the one character at a time, it features anti-hero Shadow who instead of offing bad guys with a simple jump on their head is packing what looks suspiciously like a high calibre Desert Eagle pistol.

The image of a Sonic the Hedgehog lookalike using such a realistic piece of hardware is an oddly disturbing one and rather sours initial moments with the game. Luckily though the rest of the game reveals itself to be a more traditionally wholesome title as Shadow runs, jumps and err... shoots his way through levels.

In a nod to games such as Prince of Persia, Shadow can also manipulate time to his advantage and unleash the explosive "Chaos Blast" move. He can also make use of a variety of different vehicles including motorcycles, jeeps and alien spacecraft and pick up and use handy objects like streetlamps as weapons.

The choice of whether to turn to evil during the course of the game seems a bit out of a place for a Sonic game, although its not clear exactly how evil the game actually allows you to get. It's not exactly GTA: Emerald City but it's still rather odd to see such an iconic series take such an unwarranted trip to the Dark Side. -- Harrison Dent

Playing as the villain from a series of video games is always fun, and Shadow is no different. With a huge selection of weapons and vehicles in the different level, you can either plough through with a machine gun, or you can race through the level on your own two feet, or in a G.U.N Walker. One of the game's key features is the two player mode. You can play as two different coloured versions of Shadow, or one of the four robot versions, each with an attached weapon. Depending on the path you take, you can be accompanied by different characters. Only the Hero path is of any use, as you can team up with Sonic's friends, like Tails and Espio, who can be used by a second player. Eggman's path uses just a small robot television, which can't really do anything. Same with the Black Arms, only in this case it's a floating, tentacled eye. Secret vehicles and weapons can be found on each level, providing you have found the keys dotted around the location. For example, there is a fun military vehicle on the first level. Big and armoured, so you don't take as much fire from the enemies.
One drawback is the inability to play as other characters than Shadow in the multiplayer mode.

4 out of 5 stars Not so fun but...good story to shadows past.   May 6, 2007

I like it mostly because of the story i found out more on how shadow was created and who was responsable for it etc.
You really need to think before you get this game and i mean think.
You must give this game a chance at all costs.
Firstly you will choose to work for yourself Normal work for Sonic and his friends Hero or work for Black DOOM! Dark each Route takes you to a different story to shadows path and will take you to different levels depending on the the missions you do during levels.
Also if you want to get this game SO BADLY but just cant do it and need help get the guide(Recommended) i used it because it was abit hard.
With the Routes and all.
But if you are a sonic fan and Played EVERY SONIC GAME and know all the tricks get this dont get this for your 1st 2nd 3rd sonic game you will hate it.

Shadow the Hedgehog is the anti-hero of this piece. He has faced many a trial and tribulation. Even worse than the death of his love, he has been cruelly ridiculed by the critics. Yet here I come to save him from the menaces. I stand for Shadow!

I can't see why people don't like it. It controls as well as Sonic Heroes. Sure, some of the environments are glum. Sure, it isn't extremely deep. Yet it has lots of replayability and is extremely fun. That's what matters to me. I haven't had any camera trouble either. I can't see what people are complaining about. Shadow controls well, his vehicles control well and his guns are fun to use.

Overall, Shadow isn't revolutionary, yet it's fun! Here's hoping the next Sonic game will be just as good, hopefully even better. If Sonic Team take the best ideas out of the series, roll it into one big fat pie, along with the extra filling of even better level design, only brilliance can come! Also, anyone who has yet to play Shadow, take it for what it is. Don't expect revolution or evolution. Wait to the next game for the real cream of the crop. The Secret Rings is just the beginning of a new era for Sonic.
