The best chess game on the PS2, despite it's design flaws April 13, 2008 Rob B. (UK) This game could have been superb if it wasnt for the designers... When the game ends a big black box appears in the middle of the screen to announce end game, trouble is, the box blots out most of the board so its impossible to see for sure what the final move was. Duh! On the plus side this game is very fast and furious when playing the computer. But beginners (like me) might want to look for a more user-friendly game that wasnt designed by monkeys :) Update: Having recently bought the other PS2 chess game called Chessmaster - which is so awful and complex that I almost broke the CD in half through sheer frustration - I'm now happy to say that "Play It Chess" is in fact the best chess game on the PS2, despite the negative points mentioned in this review. Overall its a very fast and addictive game, and although there are no help tutorials, the fact that you can preview your moves beforehand, then 'undo' a move you dont like, means its also a very good learning tool. (My favourite fun tactic in this game is to hassle the knights with pawns and send them running for cover all over the board:) Play It chess provides a fast and furious chess game with none of the loading times or setup complexities of the PS2 ChessMaster game.
This is a very basic Chess Simulator February 24, 2004 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
I bought this game through amazon on the stregnth of one of the 2 reviews I read. It said it had coaching sessions, and numerous options that made it sound like a good buy - it doesn't.this reviewer was talking about champion chess and not play it chess. do not make the mistake i made! happy chess playing.
Average Chess Game November 5, 2003 Andrew Kennedy 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
A good Chess game for the PS2 - but nothing special. It basically loads up and you have a 2D board with an options screen - not many options though. The graphics are clear although basic. You can choose to play the PS2 or a friend and choose which level you wish to play at. I have found that no matter what level I choose it still seems very difficult - and I used to call myself a good Chess player! One thing that may annoy in the future is the quickness of the PS2 to make it's move. I move and the PS2 move straight away - I hardly get time to think! For it's price range you can't really complain - it plays a good game.
Chess Champion Review October 25, 2003 David Lester (Birmingham, England) 10 out of 16 found this review helpful
Chess Champion is an extremely good PS2 chess game. I enjoy playing chess, yet nearly all chess console games don't impress. I own a few others chess games, like Virtual Chess for PC (which admittedly isn't bad), but Chess Champion really is a great game. I have hardly stopped playing since I recieved it a few weeks ago. There is a numerous amount of difficulty levels, so you can be good or bad at chess to like the game. There are coaching levels, it gives you hints and tips, and many other options. There is a huge amount of weird and wonderful chess sets, ranging from Napoleon at Waterloo, to cowboys in the West, soldiers from Russia. You name it, this chess game has it. A must buy for chess fanatics, or for people just wanting to learn.
