3 out of 5 stars Think Market Garden!   September 19, 2006

I bought this game a while back as I've always been a fan of the WW2 flight sims. On first appearence the game is wonderful with all the planes of the era both known and unknown. You play a pilot called James Chase, an american pilot attached to the RAF's elite squadron called the "Battle Hawks" who's job it is to confront situations no one else is capable of. The missions tie in with actual battles from the war such as The Battle Of Britain, Dunkirk, Midway even D-Day, their are also a few missions that are based on secret SOE reports such as the planned invasion of England by Nazi forces and the development of the first atomic bomb that have only recently come to light. All the while you will have to contend with the Nazi elite squadron called Nemesis, and trust me they really are! The environments are very authentic. You have to shoot down fighters, bombers, V1's and V2's. You have to bomb buildings, tanks and AA posts and sink U boats, Patrol boats, destroyers and even aircraft carriers as the game progresses. Also to keep it interesting you will occasionally man AA guns and ball turrets of B17 bombers in order to complete missions. All this adds up to a very diverse game that never really seems to get boring.

The game has some great music and sound effects, music courtesy of the composer who does the music from the TV series Lost which really adds mood. The voice acting sounds very cool and genuine and the game progressess nicely. However...

There are a few down sides to this game that need to be mentioned. The main one I found was that you cannot change the view, I would have liked to be able to play this game from a cockpit view but you can only have the standard 3rd person view directly behind the aircraft, this has caused me to lose sight of the ground on occasion and crash in a huge ball of flames being told by my wingman to eject despite the fact you can't even do that anyway. Also, until you get the ME262 and the Glouster Meteor that are jet powered the planes seem very slow. In certain instances you will need to traverse a very long distance and it takes a day and an age to do so which just leaves you feeling very frustrated, especially when you hear your structures and vehicles are being attacked and your still half a mile away.

There are a lot of secret weapons you can have on your aircraft as secondary ammo but I only use a handful and it's the ones that are actually any good! The large bombs, Long Range rockets, torpedoes and the 57mm Cannons are the best choices as they can't fail. They have these guided missiles called the "Fritz something or other" that once launched actually travel slower than most of the planes and while your guiding it in your plane is being shot to ribbons. The best guided weapon is the guided torpedo as they are fast and can also be used as anti structure missiles in a pinch. You will of course gain upgrades during your game to customise and improve your aircraft but I strongly suggest saving them for the best planes in the hanger as they are limited and certain planes are money for old rope, obviously you will know what ones are best as you play.

Overall this game is fun and rather immersive which will see you playing the game for a while, the challenge missions you unlock along the way will definitely help entertain. I hope they do make another one, although it's probably unlikely, and correct a few of these little niggles as it would be a top notch game if they did. Oh and as for "Think Market Garden", it summarises my opinion of this game "Good idea but it could have gone much better!" LOL

5 out of 5 stars We shal fight them on the..... air actually   September 3, 2004

Warning, This game is not a flight sim, it's and arcade shoot 'em up in planes, but a mighty good one at that! The scenery is lush, the planes beautifully modelled and their handelling diverse. It's really easy to pick up and play but offers a reasonably challenging learning curve. Plus it has suprising replay value, for once you can refly missions in different planes and find it entertaining!
All in all, if you're a real prop head looking for another CFS look elsewhere, but if yo want good PLANE fun (geddit) this is the one for you!

Very enjoyable game. Not too easy but not impossible either. Took me about 20 hours to complete and the great thing is that I can now do it all again in another plane without becoming bored.

I bought this game recently and I have to say its worth every penny (Amazon is the cheapest place I have seen it but thats nothing new).I've been waiting for a game like this to come out on PS2 and this doesn't disappoint,Its very addictive and when you get shot down you just wanna get back in the air and shoot the enemy down ( revenge is sweet lol)but its not just about shooting down other planes as there are various tasks like bombing, dropping torpedoes, using anti-aircraft guns and the like. So far I have got to mission 6 but there are 30 missions to complete so I still have lots to discover on this game. To sum up if you like flight combat games on PS2 then buy it (From amazon of course)I don't think you will be disappointed.
