3 out of 5 stars Alone in the Dark- something not quite right!   February 22, 2008
N. chagas
Ok, this game IS Impressive.
For the time this game was released, we couldn't ask for much better graphycs.

I must say though, that something doesn't feel quite right.
When you fire against a creature, it feels the aim is very unaqurate, and feels like you're not firing at anything.
Also, when you walk, or open doors, it also feels like the character is floating.
So, the game wasn't assembled quite right.
The game can get quite boring at times, you have to go through the same place about ten times, so you feel like giving up at times.

But, now that the bad points are out the way, let's talk about what matters.

like i said, the graphycs are good, playability is ok.
The weapons are great, unusuall for this type of game. You don't usually get to use a electricity/tesla canon, or a pulse rifle on a survival horror. Besides the sown-off double barrel shotgun is just... wow!

Storyline is ok, it's not unique, but there's a twist to it.

The controls are acceptable, you can get fustrated at times with the aim, and when selecting a weapon, since you need to use a different weapon for each different type foe.

The Music is great, there are times when the really intensive type sound comes up, and that really gets you into the game. It gives you a feeling of fear, and adrenaline at the same time.

Well, I live it up to you.
This game is one of them, that you either Love it or Hate it.

But I must say that being a survival horror fan, of games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil, this game did NOT Impress me that much.

I recomend you, atleast give it a go, it's definetively worth playing.

Good:
graphycs
weapons
somehow different (Creatures, etc...)
Music

OK:
Playability
controls
storyline

Bad:
repetitive

this game is amazing
for a start it looks awesome......sounds great...really creepy and eerie
the plot is brilliant...really sucks you in and makes you want to persevere with the game
its also huge....absolutely monstrously huge...it took a good 2 weeks of playing it a couple of hours a day to finninsh this beast of a game
the puzzles are so intricate and confusing you feel quite proud of yourself when you get past them
it also has the dual character option as you play through the game as both characters its really cool to see the game evolve from another perspective
if you like the resi games give it a go as it is easily as scary and the puzzles are more challenging and the controls are more fluid
also if you like silent hill you could do alot worse than trying this puppy out for size....not as creepy as the silent hill games but alot bigger and easiy as confusing!!!!
its fantastic.......give it a try and see if you can get through it without jumping!!!

4 out of 5 stars Play Private Eye   October 20, 2004

Sure this game may be another mansion exploration / puzzle solving creep em up, but it's the best one I have played. I have played all the Res Evil titles and Silent Hill and I have to say I enjoyed this game more than those (I did enjoy those). The game IS essentially the same ol' mansion slog as those other titles but with 3 essential differences...1, The storyline is engrossing and quite complex, you are really feel the private eye, leafing through documents to be found, some of which are upwards of 20 pages long and reveal the storyline while often not neccesarily linked to a puzzle, just flavour, seemed realistic. 2, The puzzles are more challenging than those in Res Evil (therefore more rewarding when completed). 3, The flashlight effect is very well done and really adds to the atmosphere.
I can't think of a game I have played in recent years that has absorbed me as much as this one, mainly due to the wonderfull unfolding of a storyline as you piece together events, reading old diaries and dusty manuscripts by torchlight. Not one for kids though, as I say some of the puzzles are quite fiendish, and the complex storyline and catalogue of past events to discover will be wasted if you dont take the time to absorb them.
4 out of 5 stars? Tempted to give 5, but a lack of variety in monsters is all that holds me back.

Engrossing

1 out of 5 stars Looks Like The Programmers Have Been Alone In The Dark ..   July 28, 2002

I really wanted to like this game, honestly. I've played and completed all of the previous incarnations, and mostly enjoyed them.
For those of you who don't know Alone In The Dark is the game that gave the "Survival Horror" genre a kick start. It used what was at the time a revolutionary mix of shaded polygons and 2D pre-rendered backgrounds. As a point of interest, the original Alone In The Dark managed to do something that Resident Evil took about 5 incarnations to be able to do...have enimies follow you through doors.

Although the engine didn't improve much over the next two games, each was a relitively 'solid' title.

So, I heard Alone In The Dark 4 would be going back to it's roots a haunted mansion. Anyone who has played AitD3 will know what a great reief that was.
As already mentioned, I had high hopes that something new will be tried with the tierd old genre. After all, seeing 5 ludicrisly similar Resident Evil titles it became clear that there wouldn't be any innovation from that particular series. So, who better to inject new life than the one that started it all?

If you haven't guessed already, this game is just another pitiful Resident Evil clone.

I'll start with the good points. The cutscenes certainly do look nice and are more than competantly directed (the opening shot of Carnby's office springs to mind.) Playing as the different characters does alter the way you play your game for about three miniutes. Oh, and the flash light effect looks cool (even if it has already been seen in Nocturne and all of it's Blair Witch brood on the PC)

Other than that, you know what to expect. Static backgrounds with character's that look dissociated. Really, really...illogical (for want of a better word) puzzles. After all, this is a house that you're exploring. The occupants must have had a hell of a time getting from place to place!

Other than that, the combat is Dull (with a capital D mind) and frankly unnatural. When a survival horror game implements real time damage and, say, a combat system where you can move and aim at once (it CAN be done. Max Payne etc anyone?) THEN we'll be getting somewhere

Camera angles that move would be nice. Especially camera angles a la Eternal Darkness (which I have imported.) I've had enough at not being able to see whats eating me. Not that what's eating you is scary. The 'bad guy' designs are poor to say the least.

"Unique game engine never seen before on a home console" - even if this game engine is unique the game isn't. Either the programmers were locked in a room somewhere and just missed the fact that Resident Evil had 'progressed' Survival Horror this far and they need to go further, or, they were going for the "lets mimic it and hope no one notices" approach.

Either way, this isn't a great game.
