Amazon.co.uk Review

In a nutshell:
The most exciting Formula One season for a long time has spawned a console simulation to match with long awaited new online modes and some surprising PSP connectivity optionsa

The lowdown:
Owning the official FIA license means this game is the only one with all the real 2006 drivers, cars, teams, circuits and rules – but thankfully there’s more to this game than dull simulation. In fact this year’s iteration prides itself on being accessible to everyone with scalable driving aids for every skill level. There’s also a new online version for all versions, where you can compete in a full 18 race season with real human opponents. Other welcome new additions include taking the options of playing as chief engineer through the existing career mode and more subtle change such as computer driven cars that make believable mistakes instead of just robotically keeping to the racing line.

Most exciting moment:
Since the PS2 and PSP versions are coming out at the same time you’re able to transfer data between each, you can even race other players online on the other version, no matter which console they’re playing on.

Since you ask:
Although little is known about the PS3 version of the game so far Sony has demonstrated a way to connect the PSP to it and use the portable console as a fully interactive wing mirror – displaying exactly what is going on behind you in full 3D.

The bottom line:
The PS2 and PSP are in pole position for this welcome racing update.

5 out of 5 stars F1 06: Best graphics yet!   August 30, 2008
Mrs. Lisa Brown (UK)
First, let me say i think this is the best formula 1 game ever produced to date. Great graphics, and career mode is awesome, having to apply to F1 teams and do trials and race in championships. The driving aids particualy are great, they really helped me as a beginner, but, when you get skilled enough to turn them off, you wil see how much it has held you back. A must buy.

4 out of 5 stars amazing- let down by bugs   November 26, 2007

really good game, very fast and amazing AI of the other drivers. pit stops are the best ive seen in any game. only let down by the bugs that make it crash all the time. if you want to change your fuel strategy it will freeze up and youll have to reset the console. a big rubbish but the gameplay makes up for it. not as pretty as GT4 but so fast and fun and way better how other cars react to you-shove them off, damage them and they have to pit, they move out of your way if youre lapping them etc

4 out of 5 stars Glowing Game does not mean the next should take so long!   November 8, 2007
Mr. Gary C. Palmer (UK)
F1 2006 is by far the most polished F1 game I have ever played, the competitive racing is much closer (although as you master each track and get promoted to faster cars, it becomes far too easy again), the graphics are much better, and the damage is a lot more realistic. However, irritants such as rear wing damage automatically retiring your car, no options in the pits (I dont always want to change my front wing just because it is a bit wobbly!) and lack of savable set ups means it is not quite perfect.

As you progress through the season mode you find that the most fun is to be had in the super aguri/toro rosso teams, where the poor top speed and acceleration makes winning a race supremely challenging.

The AI puts up a bit of a fight, but no where near enough. Why cant the cars at least cover the racing line/move to block once? In my final season I had to win the last race to take the championship, and the rival literally let me past - not quite the huge climax to five seasons of fighting!

The pitlane is cumbersome and monotonous - the same combo of buttons is a cheap attempt to make it feel interactive. Even on an N64 F1 game I was able to alter tyres, pressure and wing angles as I entered the pitlane.

Aside from this though the racing is good fun, the wet weather is much better (if far too rare to make the season interesting enough) and the qualifying has been superbly simulated.

The PS3 game had better be more than just a graphical upgrade - the audience is getting far too hungry for this!!

This game is brilliant, i cant keep my hands of it. I experiencxed it on the PSP first but then bought the PS2 versaion which was even better. The quality is fantastic and very realistic. The career mode is also good. I wish you could change the tyres if the weather changes however dont let it put you off, if you like exillerating racing games or are jusat a fan of F1 i would get this, its just a shame the 2007 version will not be coming out on PS2! only PS3!

3 out of 5 stars way way to easy!   July 3, 2007

its very simple really. if you want an F1 sim that on its hardest level you can pick up, play, drive the 'worst' car and win the race. then this is for you.
if however you want an F1 game that has any kind of difficulty or reality then dream on. it doesnt exist. i wish it did.
