Amazon.co.uk Preview
If there's one thing to be said of the Need for Speed series, it's that it never stays the same for long. After only one sequel EA have decided to give the underground night racing theme a rest and let you drive in the sunlight for a change. You're still a super-illegal street racer though and indeed much of the game revolves around you being pursued by the police in some very Blues Brothers-esque chases.

Appearing to take a leaf out of Burnout's book, the game encourages you to make the most of traffic and roadside objects, in order to put off the long arm of the law or simply one of your fellow racers. The demo race so far seen features a lot of weaving in and out of traffic and some very cinematic touches such as zipping underneath a giant lorry carrying tree logs, which then spill out on the road behind you further aiding your escape.

The graphics in the game have definitely received a boost from the last one and appear far more detailed and ambitious in scope than Underground. Unsurprisingly the ability to customise your car is still a large part of the appeal, although again there's a big distinction between extras that are just for show and performance tuning that actually has an effect on the way your car performs.

It probably still won't please hardened petrolheads but if you just want a simple, accessible racing game it looks like Need for Speed is set to deliver once more. --Harrison Dent

4 out of 5 stars Best of the series on PS2   May 29, 2008

Plenty of playing time in this one with loads of options to customise the cars and the career mode is addictive! Definitely worth it in the end when you unlock the M3.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive   January 24, 2008

Initially when I saw another "Need for Speed" game released in Blockbuster/Asda/Game etc I used to think "Not another racing game! I'll stick with my Gran Turismo" This was before I knew what NFS was all about. Having recently bought this title I am definitely hooked on the series. Underground 2 is next on my "Blacklist"!!
The most addictive part is the Pursuit - trying to dodge the Cops and get safe - even in the Tollbooth section - is awesome. I was in career mode last night and I was being pursued for about 20 - 25 minutes - nearly Busted a couple of times but managed to drive my way out. Ended up with about $86,000 worth of Bounty. Adrenaline levels considerably elevated I think.
If you don't buy any other Racing game then this one is a Definite Must-Have. Graphics, handling, playability, music - it's all there and all excellent.
Go on you know you Need to have it!!
Well Done EA

amazing! this game is no1. when i first played on this i was stunned by the reality of it. The cops are easy on the first blacklist racers but as you get past no5 they get sooo much harder. The helicopters are easy to get away from but the most dangerous thing are the spike strips. I am on blacklist no4 and i still havent met sergent cross. if you enjoy high speed carnage games this is the one. just remember you dont into pursuits much unless you go round asking for it.
BUY THIS GAME!

5 out of 5 stars best of the nfs series!!!..... so far   November 3, 2007

after hesitating to buy this, im soooo glad i did, the graphics are brilliant and now you get to race during the day. the soundtrack is quite impressive, reinforcing the standard set for NFS:U2 which too was a great game.

the storyline is the main driving force, the age old revenge tale of the underdog, who got cheated and now wants to get his own back. the addition of 'boss races' from a 'blacklist' of wanted racers, is a brilliant possibly brought from the finale its predecessor. A new 'marker' system means that your defeated opponents car is now up for grabs. make a lucky choice and you can have a sooped up porshce or ford mustang without spending a penny. the addition of the police is a welcome return from the really old NFS games, and you can spend most of your time, trying to avoid everything the cops throw at you.

the modification system has been striped to the basics, so instead of front bumpers side skirts and rear bumpers being idependently changable it come as one big body kit. which i think is an improvement. its just taking some of the choice but giving it back with ease of selection.

my version does lag a bit at the latter stages of the career but its for 2 seconds every half an hour and its probably just my plastation 2 showing a bit of its age. but overall still a great buy and in my view better then it predecessor NFS: underground 2 and it sucessor NFS carbon. buy it now!!!

i got this game and i loved it. i never complated it though because it takes ages and it would take a long time to get boring. most games you can complete in a few days or maybe a few weeks at most but this game goes on and on and on... until you reach the end. the police chases get annoyingly hard as you get further through but they are still do-able. great game, i highly reccomend it.
