Amazon.co.uk Review Watching the intro to World Rally Championship leaves you in no doubt that this is a quality title--and you won't be disappointed when you arrive at the business end of the game, either. All the courses are modelled extremely well, giving a real feel for the differing types of terrain you must traverse, and the cars are even more stunningly put together. Watch as suspension springs move under the arches while you career around bends--and if you really get the car sideways you'll even be able to see the brake calipers behind those lovely alloys. What's more, each stage is introduced by a glorious full motion video describing the venue and conditions you're likely to face at the event. Be warned, however--this is one tough cookie of a game, and you'll need to beat the normal difficulty mode before you can try Professional. As the voice over for the full Championship Intro says, "With the World Rally Championship, it's not just a question of winning, but surviving". With a well executed two-player mode that'll keep both you and your friends entertained until the small hours, and even the option to register online and be in with a chance of winning a real Mitsubishi rally car (for a limited time, of course), could you want any more? We don't think so. --Andi Flower

Excellent but some flaws April 16, 2008 N. Cadman (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wow, cant believe some reviews on here, 1*??? what??? This is one of the, if not THE, best PS2 rally game. Yes I have played most- if not all- contenders, there are some other games I would give same score to, but if you like rally/car games this is definitely worth a go. This game is great game but with some flaws, (mostly the loading times)however they dont make it unplayable at all. When you get how the car handles, this is top notch game. When you first play any good car/rally game you gotta 'feel' the car, & tune/choose one that suits your style. Rallying is controlled aggression to me & WRC encourages that. I have never driven a real rally car, so cant comment on realism, but it seems near as any other game to me. Graphics are good, they served me fine! Apart from the too long load times the only other gripe worth noting, is that sometimes the co-driver seemed to be slow with the advice. Damaged cars run slower, so dont go too gung-ho to start with! Dont be put of by some reviews, this is a great game, easy worth th cheap as chips prices I have seen it for on various sites. I wanted to give this 4.5*, but cant, was tempted to give this 5*, as some scores here are outrageously low, however, I chose not to let that influence my score. It is a great game but has some flaws, its not quite perfect, so 4*. (Obviously its a matter of choice, but to give sample of my taste, my other contenders for favourite rally game are McRae 1 (ps1), V-Rally 2 (DC), & GT3 (PS2))
Pushing the envelope. December 21, 2002 Mr. A. Privett (Oxofrdshire) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
WRC came as a pleasant surprise after playing V-Rally 3. The controls are pretty good (although, when will developers get it into their heads that gamers would like to customise their controls to suit their individual preferences?). I like to choose R1 for down gear and R2 for up... But at least you can use analogue for steering and accelerating/braking (unlike V-Rally 3)! I also like the semi-auto gearbox choice with auto down-shifts and manual up-shifts.The cars are faithfully rendered as is the engine sound. I didn't expect the sound to be so good as this is so often overlooked. The graphics are superb. The replays are wonderful to watch, with a wide choice of cameras, making it feel almost like watching it on TV. I only have a couple of minor critisims: Firstly, no cars to unlock. I would've liked to start in FW drive and work my way up to 2LTT Turbo 4WD; secondly, the learning curve is too easy. I won the first two championships in easy and normal settings with every rally won; and finally, the damage... You either knacker your car or get away with it. All in all a very good game, and since it is Platinum, even better!
The best rally game yet! September 22, 2002 Adam (Illinois, America) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game may not have the sharpest graphics of them all, but it's the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel. WRC is a dirt-coated thrill ride through twists and turns, over bumps and ditches. Nothing matches this game in fun or reality...
Utter Pants April 16, 2002 Mr. A. J. Fleming (UK) 6 out of 32 found this review helpful
This game offers the realism of a sprite based megadrive driving game, the fun of hitting yourself over the head with a lead weight, the visuals of a naked 100 year old, the sound of a badly dubbed kung fu movie. Sort out you life and get GTA3 or GT3 the kings of gaming, or if you want rallying then rallisport on Xbox is awesome fun. This is the gaming equivalent of Robbie Williams annoying, over rated and talentless.
Not quite the full McRae ! April 4, 2002 mercury780@hotmail.com (London) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I bought this just three days ago and have probably spent just three hours playing it. The graphics & sound are not be criticised, quite outstanding indeed. The feedback through a dual shock controller ties in impressively with the numerous degrees of bumps & road surface changes you see on screen. As far as I can see, no ommissions have been made from the usual rally stages & procedures. However, after roughly an hour of playing the game I began to feel something was missing from the gameplay. It just didn't seem exhilerating somehow. It wasn't long before I realised, once you've mastered the handling in the first ten minutes it's way too easy. For 99% of a stage you don't have to come off the accelerator which gets tedious. Even upon an icy road you can absolutely hammer around hairpins without so much as braking. Sounds like fun? Guess again! On long straights you try to build up enough speed to scare yourself at the next bend, but oddly enough this ends up frustrating you when you realise the car's top speed seems like a milk float & you cost around the corner easily! Now isn't that the best feature in a Gran Turismo 3 when you're against tough competition or a clock, yet you can easily blow the whole level by getting carried away? Bearing this in mind, the realism of the road surface feel becomes rather irrelevant when you know it presents no threat whatsoever. The 'gameplay' issue is something playstation in my opinion has always been generally numero uno. If the PS2 wants to maintain the loyalty of it's gamers, having currently been dwarfed by the Gamecube & the Xbox regarding system speed & memory, it must continue to lead the field in gameplay. Sadly this game having been written with such attention to detail, has somehow overlooked the most important facets of any game. Playability, longevity, exhileration & progressive difficulty.
