5 out of 5 stars in your lounge, no one can hear u scream!   December 3, 2008

I have nt enjoyed a game this much for ages. No dodgy cut scenes, no messing, just straight into this nasty, scary world. Great sound, shocks and visuals makes this one of the most atmospheric games ever. You never really get accustomed to the scares. Even in the later levels theres some real spine chilling moments.

The difficulty level is about right though can be hard in places. Expect a lot of deaths / replays to get through some parts as some of the fight scenes are brutal. This means you have to be smart how you use your weapons, also don't expect unlimited ammo - this all makes for a great challenge that just gets stronger the deeper you get in to it.

Have been some great games this year but this is my personal fav, challenging, atmospheric and very nasty - well done EA!

This is just a great game. In terms of atmosphere and tension, this is probably second to none. The two things I really struggled with were the difficulty on the first playthrough and the ridiculous amount of screen-deaths the player experiences. This should have been more balanced in my opinion. The most important criticism however is that the fantastic story is told that insufficiently. 95 percent of the story is delivered via audio or just plain text logs without any corresponding visuals, while 4 percent are presented as in-game sequences. Here another character stands behind a glass window or other device through which the player can not pass and you basically have to stop walking and watch that single character talk to you while moving a bit. This feels very outdated and compared to series like MGS or Resident Evil this is rather inappropriate. The point obviously was to completely immerse the player and not switch into cutscenes, but I perceive it as slightly cheap and unspectacular. So, for the future I would love to see adequate cutscenes explore the great storyline behind this game. Only the remaining 1 percent (the intro and the outro) use in-game engine cutscenes, which add up to about 5 minutes in total. So you see what I mean... Otherwise: Fantaqsctic work, EA! Keep it up!

This game looks great, but if you are one of those people who doesnt like reapeating things over and over then dont buy this. Most of the time you simply dont have enough weapons/ ammo, so it takes you about 10 goes to complete a small section. This can get very boring !! Also the aliens appear from no where you have no indication of where they are coming from and when you try to run from them to get a better point to shoot... guess what you bump into a door or a box that materializes from no where !! Apart from the few annoyances, the game is pretty creepy, weird noises and pretty gruesome aliens, when you get killed which is frequent, the killing seaquence can be a bit drawn out !! I have found myslef shouting at the screen ' I get the point' as an alien slashes you for the 20th time ! Rent it first !

5 out of 5 stars A masterclass in atmospheric gaming   November 20, 2008

Wow, where did this come from?

After not really knowing too much about Dead Space, I picked it up on a whim with Far Cry 2, and boy oh boy... what an amazing surprise it turned out to be.

Providing what is without doubt the most atmospheric gaming experience I have ever had, Dead Space plays like a combination of the movies Aliens, Event Horizon and The Thing as you navigate a devastated space craft trying to find out what happened to the crew. You'll be in genuine terror at times as you desperately fight to survive some horrifying looking creatures and some masterful set pieces that make this one of the year's best new games.

It looks stunning to boot, with detailed, smooth visuals that perfectly create the right atmosphere with moody lighting effects and large scale areas coupled with some really impressive 'space walking' sequences and a genuinely haunting score/soundtrack combined with brilliant voice acting and a superior plot make this one big scary pot of awesome.

I cannot recommend Dead Space highly enough. If you like survival horror, you will not do better. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have   November 10, 2008

I have been hooked to this game since purchasing it. The level of difficulty is just right, and the storyline and "whats behind this door" aspect keep you coming back.

As others have said, the graphics are stunning. In places, such as when you walk on to the bridge for the first time, I just looked at the screen and thought wow as you looked out over the planet into space with the asteroids hurtling towards you. The enemies are genuinely scary, the number of times I have not wanted to open a door for fear of what is making the noise behind it. The sound effects are excellent, there are times when you actually feel afraid walking down a corridor because you can hear the creatures scuttling down the vents in the roof.

Controls and gameplay are spot on. I'm now up to level 8 where difficulty is really starting to ramp up. You really do need to know how to use your different weapons and the weak spots on the different types of enemy. Its a truely atmospheric game, and dare I say, perfect in every way from the point of view of a good horror sci-fi game.

For me this is one of those must have games up there with COD4 and GTA4. Well done EA!
