Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review

While Electronic Arts' other sports games may be locked in a deadly rivalry with their competitors there really hasn't been a golf sim to go head-to-head with Tiger Woods for years. There doesn't seem to be too much laurel sitting going on though, especially since this is, like many Electronic Arts games this year, the first time the game has been designed specifically with the next generation of consoles in mind. Naturally that means the most realistic graphics yet, not only for the course itself but also for Tiger and the other real-world golfers. Their faces and expressions look totally life-like and on the PS3 and 360 you can use a webcam or digital camera to import your own face and graft it to your own in-game custom golfer.

In terms of gameplay the major new feature is the concept of "shot confidence" which monitors your performance through your whole career, adding an extra degree of tension to difficult shots but also allowing you to examine your game in detail to find out where you're going right and wrong. After criticisms that last year's game was a bit thin on options this new game has the greatest number of courses ever including Westchester Country Club, TPC Boston, Cog Hill and East Lake. There's also the expanded GamerNet mode which acts like a sort of YouTube just for the game, allowing you post in-game videos and challenge other people to a game in an online world dedicated to nothing but golf.

3 out of 5 stars Fun challenge but not all that it could be!   February 23, 2008
M. Scott (Newcastle)
My title sums this up mostly. The game itself, which is the main thing to go on, is very good indeed. Some people have complained it is too difficult or that some swing mechanics are not quite right, but this is a simple practice issue and after you sit down for a few rounds and work out what not to do and what you need to change to get differing effects then you should be better equipped for the challenge. This is a good thing, too many people want to pick this up with a one button swing to be able to hit 350yd drives straight down the middle of the fairway, but I prefer the fact that at first you suck (oh and I did) but with practice you get better and this is itself is a nice feature, that all your hard work pays off and you find yourself actually getting immense satisfaction when you birdie that hole to get a share of the lead.

Now on to my gripes....and there are only a few but they are quite major flaws in an otherwise great game. The graphics are very sloppy and just stink of a rushed through job to get yet another yearly output of an EA game with very little improvement. Sure for team games this is great as you get the latest rosters, the latest rule changes, a slight improvement on the controls...whatever. For golf there is no need to rush these things through other than for pure greed. There is no new names every year that will be appearing in a game version, there are only so many things that you can actually change about how to get someone to virtually swing a golf club, and to be honest there have been no real innovations other than the analogue stick swing feature since the early 90's golf classics like Links etc... So why the bad news?? The graphics are very PS2 and I constantly find myself looking at the textures and models in things like Resistance Fall of Man and Assassins Creed and wondering why i'm stuck looking at a golf course which has perfect cylindrical trees that shine, 2D planes of crappy looking textures pretending to be leaves, and water that looks far too much like glass. I look at other games and think they have managed perfect looking trees and leaves which move in the breeze so why not this one??? It certainly feels like they have not actually put any more effort into the next-gen games and you get the distinct feeling that they have made a generic version to port across all platforms and just added a few extra texture maps for the high-rez games.

The players themselves are quite good (although Wayne Rooney looks like he has been on a bit of a crash diet for the game) and I realise the swings must be extremely difficult to model well but that is no excuse for the lack of variability.

The game face feature is very impressive though. After taking two decent photos of myself, struggling to upload them to the EA server, then waiting what seemed like 30minutes for the processing to take place I was presented with something that looked fairly good, but after a little play in the customisation options i've been left with a very good attempt at myself in the game, to the extent that people comment that it actually looks like me. The only disappointment is that the voices are only American accents, which is a little dissappointing considering the various nationalities contained in the game itself, let lone the marketing of this around the world...just one more area of sloppy design that has convinced me to refuse to buy any more EA games until they prove they are willign to put some actual effort into the development process rather than just churn out the constant revamps of the same game year after year.....Good fun game but could have been so much better if they had tried a bit harder!

4 out of 5 stars VERy HARD   January 12, 2008
Daniel McNally (Sunderland UK England)
Firsty this is the first tiger woods PGA tour i have played on.
The good thing about this is the graphics are fantastic if u play through HD cable tiger woods and the other golfers look 100% like each other, plus when the fans get hit they react which is really good coss it dosent look good if a fan gets hit in head and stand still like nothing's happened. Plus the gameplay is excellent.
However when i go on play now i find it quite easy but when you are on career mode it is very difficuilt one bad shot and u end up 3 over par for that hole how are you going to win tournaments if u have a round 90 all the time and it also takes so long to build up you have got to the play the game a month or two to even get to a pro level
But overall its a very good game just the difficuilty is a bit too much for me that is why i only give it a 4 star game

2 out of 5 stars Career Mode   January 3, 2008

Disappointed with career mode. On previous versions I had for ps2 you could play tournaments with more than one player. Now it seems only one player can do this now.

Also the analagoue swing is very sensitive.

4 out of 5 stars Tiger woods 08 a long time to get into but when you do it is easy   December 31, 2007
fit laddd (wales)
I aint no whizz kid on any game to be honest. But this games takes time and when you start winning; it gets easy.
It takes around 40 minutes to do 18 holes when you start and will last about 30 when you get good.
I have been playing it non stop for about a month.
It took me ages to get my skills up. A tip would be to play tiger challenge where you play against other celebrities such as wayne rooney.
This is the easiest way to get your skills up. It took me about 3 weeks to work that out
I couldnt win anything to start but my current skill is LEGEND and about 100 points on all of the individual skills.
I just did a round and was 13 under par.
It depends what type of gamer you are, this suits me its quite relaxing and it can be quite boring takin 40 minutes a round.
I would recommend it cause it is quite relaxing no loud music no loud special FX
OH yes I have finished 60% of the game and all of the tiger challenges.
SO anyone can play this game

4 out of 5 stars Stick with it   November 14, 2007
M. Taylor (Essex)
There are some reviews here stating the game is very hard and you don't hit your shots far enough. All i can say is stick with it, with your increased confidence/skills everything gets a little easier. Shots get longer, more spin can be used. Practise makes perfect. Some people probably get annoyed because the first hole in career mode, without any extra skills, is very difficult. A par 4 that's almost unreachable in two shots. I was a bit taken aback by the difficulty at first but now i play this alot. Tiger '07 was just too easy, almost every shot going right next to the pin or going in. I'm well into double figures on hole in ones, thats just not right.
