Ok, so I was one of those happy people prepared to sacrifice an arm and a leg to get one of these back in 2007. Now it's 2010, let's see how well I've done...
Pros:
An upgrade in almost every way to the PS2, it makes good use of Hardrive, HD, USB and wireless technology. It even accepts a variety of flash cards. Yay! It can store your movies, photos and music, though it is a bit touchy about what formats it wants to play. It will play your old PS 1 and 2 games to a certain extent.
The X-bar interface is something I personally had to get used to, not being a PSP owner, but this has come to be a familiar and efficient way of accessing PS3 applications.
Games have been slow to come out for it, but the ones that do are usually spectacular. Console owners cannot dispute the overall gaming power of a PS3 And for those that love online gaming,(this is where Xbox players get thoroughly shafted)connection to other players across the world is FREE of charge at the time of writing (obviously your actual internet connection is not free). The Playstation Network also offers a host of other treats like games to buy and movies to rent.
A generally well made product, in three years of hardcore gaming and movie watching my PS3 has yet to freeze, error or fail to startup. But perhaps I've just been really lucky.
Upgradable: Tired of simply 60GB? Swap it out for 1TB, no problem!
Cons:
At the time of purchase the price was horrendous and it seems to have only decreased by about £50 over the last three years. This price is certainly not justified in my opinion. A good gaming Laptop could perhaps have been purchased for the same amount.
The PS3 may not freeze but it heats up soemthing terrible. This console is more effective than the radiator at heating my room in winter, no joke.
If Sony ever said that this console was backwards compatable, they lied. There is very little provision for backwards compatability. Very few vintage games will run without flaws and they didn't even bother to build memory card slots into thier new machine. I gave up ultimately.
For the last two and a bit years the PS network has seemed a bit of a joke to me, selling add on packs and bit games that you could run on a mobile. It has only now started to pick up it's pace with a selection of movies and some vintage games (EG FFVII, now designed to work with PS3) Slow, Sony!
As with any console there are still kinks to work out. Sony have barely scratched the surface of the beast which they claimed would be thier gaming flagship and sail them comfortably into 2017. It probably will. When gamers are forced to choose between a new console or a new car, that's a sure sign that gaming isn't just a hobby any more. This is Living! So buy it and enjoy it!

this old thing is a dust magnet after a month and u need one update after every game u play mind u it is good online AND YOU CAN GET YOUTUBE!! and gameplay online is quality and free better than xbox 360 arcade and elite put together but one thing playstation home is a huge FAIL all u do is sit on benches well the graphics not as good as slim playstation store premier leauge season finished a month ago FIFA 10 £31.99 but slim is better still playstation store is just the same

The PS3 is great. I like how you can play online for free and i seem to have less problems on my PS3 than when i play on my friends xbox 360. I have never had any problems with my PS3 the build quality is so much better than xbox as you always hear of xboxs breaking. A must buy for all gamers.
